"raw_text": "Ronald Cotton \u2014 eyewitness misidentification and DNA exoneration (Burlington, North Carolina)\n\nOn July 29, 1984, at around three in the morning, a man broke into the apartment of Jennifer Thompson, a twenty-two-year-old college student in Burlington, North Carolina, and sexually assaulted her. She escaped through the back door. Later that same night, a second woman was sexually assaulted nearby.\n\nInvestigators recovered foam rubber at Thompson's apartment and a drop of blood at the second crime scene. Thompson described her attacker to police as \"a tall, light-skinned Black man\" and worked with them to build a composite sketch. She was shown a set of mugshots that included Ronald Cotton, a twenty-two-year-old local man with prior arrests for breaking and entering and attempted assault. She identified him from the photographic array. Cotton was arrested on July 31, 1984, and police found tennis shoes with foam insoles at his home. Shown a live lineup afterward, Thompson identified Cotton again.\n\nAt trial in January 1985, Cotton was convicted of first-degree rape, first-degree burglary, and first-degree sexual offense, and sentenced to life plus fifty years. The second victim had identified a different suspect, and evidence of that identification was kept from the jury.\n\nIn 1987 the North Carolina Supreme Court reversed the conviction, holding that evidence of the second victim identifying a different man should have been admitted. Cotton was retried in November 1987. By then both women identified him as their attacker. The defense sought to present Bobby Poole as an alternate suspect: Poole's blood type matched evidence recovered from the second assault, and while imprisoned he had confessed to both crimes. The court refused to allow the jury to hear it. Cotton was convicted again, this time of both assaults, and sentenced to life plus fifty-four years.\n\nIn the spring of 1995, at the request of the defense, the Burlington Police Department turned over all of the physical evidence in the case, including the rape kits from both victims, for DNA testing. The testing excluded Ronald Cotton and matched Bobby Poole, who was by then already serving a life sentence for other sexual assaults. The charges against Cotton were dismissed on June 30, 1995, after he had served ten and a half years. On July 11, 1995, Poole pleaded guilty to both rapes and received seventy years on top of the sentence he was already serving.\n\nCotton received $110,000 in compensation from the state. He went to work at a laboratory company, married, and had a child. He and Jennifer Thompson-Cannino met for the first time after his exoneration, became friends, and began traveling together to speak about wrongful conviction and the reform of eyewitness identification procedures. They published a joint account of the case, Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption, in 2009.",
